  1. Hi Ariel. I thought about the same thing as I watched the video about history of technology. The first satellite, Sputnik by Russia gave a shock to Americans and they realized that math and science are more important to teach. Your caption explains well how innovation was made. I often see this competition and Nation at Risk in negative ways, however, I think it is true that American Science could grow more and was developed a lot because of this notion throughout the nation. Thank you for sharing :)

  2. Ariel, I also agree that Sputnik being sent into space by the Russians before the Americans achieved this great accomplishment was a turning point in mathematics education. We as a nation strive for the best, and the fact that another nation accomplished this great feat before us really hurt our nation's repertoire. Due to this, Math and Science subjects in school were moved to the top of the list of importance, and more pressure was put on the students to do well in these subjects. They were, after all, the future scientists and mathematicians, so the future of our nation was in their hands.

  3. Ariel,

The launch of Sputnik by the Russians, definitely made Americans realize that they are behind in math and science. That is when the government pushed for better math and science education because they were humiliated and wanted to win the space race. With this effort, Americans became more advanced in math and science, which in result led to many new technologies. Your quote fits perfectly, because in this time of competition and struggle, many new innovations were created. Thanks to the embarrassment, we were able to realize that we are behind everyone else and something was done.
